Handcrafted–Indepth with Ink and Fiber
January 23, 2018 @ 9:30 am - 12:00 pm
Free – $10Handcrafted is where the makerspace trend and the museum combine for hands-on crafting. Spend an hour in each zone. Bring a snack and take a break in between.
In the Ink Zone, as we make paper, we talk about different sources of paper throughout history. While making ink, we discuss ingredients and properties of ink and then we try out dip pens and talk about how writing technology has changed over time. Try our letterpress and typewriters. Head home with your own handcrafted booklet, home-made ink and a dip pen for each student.
In the Fiber Zone, we explore 4 natural fibers and learn how they processed from thread to cloth to clothing. Spin thread and use it in your own weaving. Sew a sachet on our treadle sewing machine and try out a sock knitting machine. Head home with a cardboard loom to weave your own bookmark.
This field trip is designed for students 8 years and older who are comfortable with scissors and possess some fine motor skills. However, children of all ages are welcome. The cost is $10 per student of any age; adults and non-students aged 4 and under, who are not participating in the the hands-on activities, are free. Limited to 16 students, so register early!.
